What is Café au Play?
Café au Play is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to open a coffeehouse with play areas for children and activities for children, caregivers, and the community. The coffeehouse will provide a welcoming, comfortable environment where adults and children can gather on a daily basis, develop lasting relationships and exchange resources. Proceeds from the coffee bar will help provide funding for Café au Play; patrons will design and lead activities; families will connect to services and support networks. Café au Play intends to change the way the public embraces the needs of families and be a leader in creating family friendly cities. Read more about the Café au Play Model
Café au Play will inhabit the former Wake-Up Deli building on the northeast corner of SE 57th and Division across from Atkinson Elementary School. Now called Tabor Commons, the site is in the process of being completely renovated.
Opsis Architecture and Greenworks Landscaping are working with Tabor Commons and Café au Play to help create a family- and community-friendly space that is sustainable or “green” in design and practice. We anticipate that the renovated building will qualify for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Standard Certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.
Removal of the underground gas tanks, soil clean-up, recycling of renovation materials, energy-efficient lighting and appliances and many other sustainable building practices will help us attain our green goals. An inviting, comfortable coffeehouse and a beautiful outdoor green space with a play area, terraced patio and farm stand - this is the future of Café au Play.
